Deceleration of the solar wind in the Earth's foreshock region: Isee 2 and Imp 8 observations

摘要: The deceleration of the solar wind, in region interplanetary space filled by ions backstreaming from earth's bow shock and associated waves, is studied using a two-spacecraft technique. This deceleration, which correlated with ‘diffuse’ but not ‘reflected’ ion population, depends on wind bulk velocity: at low velocities (below 300 km/s) velocity decrease ∼5 km/s, while higher (above 400 may be as large 30 km/s. Along this undergoes deflection ∼1° away direction shock. energy balance shows that kinetic loss far exceeds thermal possibly gained wind; therefore least part must go into waves and/or ions.
