Characterization of zebra mussel (Dreissena polymorpha) sperm motility: duration of movement, effects of cations, pH and gossypol

摘要: We have examined effects of time after activation, pH, sodium and potassium, gossypol concentrations on sperm motility zebra mussel (Dreissena polymorpha). Zebra spermatozoa appeared to remarkable viability in the fresh water comparison with freshwater fish sperm. Duration is possibly one longest among animals, since it was not significantly changed 3 h incubation at room temperature (20 °C) or 24 ±0 °C. High osmotic pressure suppresses potassium are similar. Spermatozoa were inactive acid pH became gradually motile when exposed 6.0–9.0. Gossypol be a very potent spermicidal agent inhibited motility. This compound also fertilization. observed some differences between North American European mussels. These data biology may useful for better handling gametes under laboratory conditions.
