From manageable to losing control: a grounded theory study of psychosis risk syndrome

摘要: Aim The purpose of this study is to develop a theoretical explanation the prodromal schizophrenia process, or so-called psychosis risk syndrome, by describing patients' own experiences with symptoms, thoughts and feelings. Methods A total 40 interviews were conducted in Taiwan. Grounded Theory method was selected because its demonstrated effectiveness generating theory around dynamic complex processes on which little known, all case syndrome. Constant comparison analysis, memo writing, member checking, sampling adopted. Results core framework developed process syndrome described as proceeding from manageable uncontrollable. Four stages emerged analysis: (1) something wrong, (2) boiling up, (3) breaking point, (4) losing control. Conclusions resulting research innovative presenting patterns clinical staging that marks progression premorbid stage full-blown psychosis. In addition specifying detailed through in-depth interviews, makes two fundamental contributions by: adding evidence current science taking experience into consideration improve validity screening tools design appropriate intervention programs for people early warning signs developing schizophrenia.
