摘要: Groundwater contamination is becoming a serious problem in many Brazilian regions. European countries started to deal with this issue the 1980s, mainly caused by extensive usage of nitrogenous fertilizers and absence domestic wastewater treatment. Due its high solubility, nitrate readily passes through soil reaches aquifer. Thereafter, ion moves, following groundwater flow, can be found several kilometers from area where pollution occurred. Concern about due link between contaminant various human health diseases, such as methemoglobin cancer. Studies carried out France enabled design implementation biological denitrification plants throughout country, order remove contaminated groundwater. Heterotrophic facilities shown adequate treat water flows satisfactory removal efficiency, especially when static media supports are employed. The objective research was evaluate existence denitrifying microorganisms bamboo (Bambusa tuldoides) verify feasibility their use inoculate pilot-scale fixed-bed bioreactor. support material selected fill bioreactor bed commercial polypropylene Pall rings, since has porosity associated wide superficial area. able produce retain large amount cells. Using ethanol carbon source, (N-NO3−) efficiency stood around 80 % for maximum nitrogen loading rate approximately 6.5 mg N-NO3− L−1 h−1.
