摘要: A wealth of information has been gathered during the past decades that water molecules do play an important role in structure, dynamics, and function bacteriorhodopsin (bR) purple membrane. Light-induced structural alterations bR as detected by X-ray neutron diffraction at low high resolution are discussed relationship to mechanism proton pumping. The analysis intermediate structures revealed photon-induced rearrangements hydrogen bonds concomitant with conformational changes chromophore protein. These observations led understanding key features pumping mechanism, especially vectoriality different modes translocation release uptake domain bR. In addition, influence via equilibrium fluctuations, which must occur adequate amplitude so energy barriers between states can be overcome.
