Dietitians’ perceptions of communicating with preadolescent, overweight children in the consultation setting: the potential for e‐resources

摘要: Background: There are calls to enhance existing child weight management interventions and develop new treatment approaches. The potential for interactive electronic resources (e-resources) support child–dietitian communication has yet be explored. Towards developing such a tool, the present study aimed understand dietetic attitudes approaches communicating with preadolescent overweight children in individual consultations behaviour change. Methods: A purposive sample of 18 dietitians, providing advice 7–11-year-old children, took part study. Individual semi-structured telephone interviews were conducted. Data transcribed then analysed using inductive thematic analysis. Content analysis was used interpret attitude towards e-resources. Results: Six overarching themes identified describing dietitians’ views: complexity treating childhood obesity, strategic balance focus between parent, child’s capacity communicate affecting their contribution, verbal features that can them, as well expectations resources. Independent inter-rater agreement 76.9% 73.1%, respectively. majority dietitians (n = 13) supported concept introducing an multimedia eresource into consultations. Conclusions: Most sought engage consultation, visual aids complement strategies serve scaffolding conversation. is scope e-resources communication, provided they flexibly tailored meet needs dietitian child.
