Northern Aboriginal Events as Tourist Attractions: Traditional Cree Gatherings in Northern Quebec

摘要: In the past twenty years, following a period of rapid modernization, most nine Cree communities northern Quebec have begun returning to their former village sites for local summer festivals lasting week or more. These "traditional gatherings" serve multiple purposes residents, allowing elders and middle-aged residents return places where they grew up raised children, fostering greater sense community participants reconnect with cultural heritage through traditional activities foods. A few tourists also spend time at gatherings, although events not become major attractions reasons ranging from distance lack awareness marketing. This article considers viability challenges developing gatherings as tourist based on preliminary research conducted two such in 2007, interviews conversations regional tourism officials. The concludes that do hold potential development, but many factors must first be considered, including how increased numbers visitors could affect original community-based these events. More is needed fully understand feel about benefits impacts attracting more which were created fulfill cultural, historical, social, recreational needs.
