Dreaming of Diasporas: Urban Developments and Transnational Identities in Contemporary Kolkata

摘要: This paper examines the contested nature of diasporas and their complex involvement in dynamics international development by focusing on recent construction luxury condominiums fringes Indian metropolis Kolkata. These new housing projects are built marketed with a self-consciously global aesthetic actively promoted to both overseas communities local elites as spaces which one can take up an explicitly “international” identity. argues that these discourses developments regarding life-space lifestyle part broader project intended help Kolkata regain its glory “world city.” Furthermore, it is suggested deployment heavily mythologized figure crucial element for mobilizing key actors constituting material transformations postcolonial city.
