The burdens of social capital: How socially-involved people dealt with stress after Hurricane Katrina

摘要: Research shows that those with greater social capital enjoy better physical and mental health. The current study illuminates a paradox of which may afflict involved in traumatic events. Several years survey data reveal dynamic picture the link between stress following Hurricane Katrina. Results initially after Katrina, who were more socially embedded carried greatest load respect to helping displaced population, thus experiencing stress. But over time, most socially-involved then snapped back from their stressful experiences rapidly than isolates. This confirms course events, involvement first exposes people stress, but as time passes, provides them significant buffer against negative psychosocial experiences.
