摘要: Due to ineffective wastewater treatment technologies, pharmaceuticals such as the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs)-a common class of antidepressants which inhibit transporter (SERT)-can be found in surface waters and marine receiving near effluents. Understanding how exposure these chemicals might impact non-target organisms, especially combined with other environmental stressors like hypoxia, is essential order thoroughly evaluate risk. It was hypothesized that both acute chronic SSRI fluoxetine (FLX) would interfere metabolic hypoxia response Gulf toadfish, Opsanus beta. Here we demonstrate intraperitoneal 50 μg g-1 FLX significantly reduces regulation index, or degree regulation, toadfish. Acute reduced SERT mRNA expression first third gill arches, but not affected heart tissues second arch. In contrast, index unaffected by 14-17 day waterborne environmentally relevant (0.01 L-1) approximately 1000-fold higher (8.5 concentrations. However, concentration sufficient induce a systemic elevation plasma Chronic did alter tissues. The results this study implicate involvement 5-HT pathways tolerance current levels are insufficient impair fish.
