摘要: Several fragmented tropical forests within Southeast Asia, namely on northern Sumatra and across Borneo, are home to remnant declining populations of wild orangutans (Pongo spp), the only extant nonhuman great ape found in Asia. These other sympatric fauna increasingly threatened by alteration destruction their habitats. The latest available assessments from International Union for Conservation Nature (IUCN) recognize Bornean as an endangered species, whereas Sumatran counterparts, at precipitously falling population numbers (Wich et al. 2003; Singleton 2004; Wich al., 2008b), identified critically (IUCN 2008). While value preserving species such has previously been touted serving important biological functions, particularly a community ecology perspective, more recent emphasis strengthening ties between goals conservation socioeconomic development among impoverished communities that most likely face direct human-wildlife conflicts related local land use practices.
