摘要: Background Endoscopic self-expanding metal stent (SEMS) placement as a bridge to surgery is an option for acute malignant colonic obstruction. There ongoing debate regarding the superiority and oncological safety of SEMS compared with emergency surgery. This retrospective study aimed compare outcomes these treatment approaches. Methods Patients were identified from cohorts treated between 2005 2012 in two teaching hospitals, which one used only patients large bowel obstruction, whereas other attempted placement. Only curative intent included. Results The included 59 whom was 51 who underwent alone. The successful primary anastomosis rate higher group than surgery-alone among left-sided obstruction (30 43 versus 10 34 respectively; P = 0·001), stoma formation less common (11 23 34; P < 0·001). Such differences not apparent right-sided Secondary rates comparable approaches (left-sided: 11 13 34, P = 0·322; right-sided: 1 16 17, P = 1·000). no significant morbidity, mortality, recurrence or survival. Conclusion Endoscopic increased
