Do patents alter the direction of scientific inquiry? Evidence from a survey of academic scientists

摘要: We use data from 3000 academic scientists to estimate the effects of other parties’ patents on academics’ research. Nearly half all report that their choice research projects has been affected by presence patents. find transaction costs and culture workplace have largest influence over whether or not affect direction but scientists’ understanding patent law; recent experience seeking permission patented material; source funds are also significant.
