An analysis overlapping questions in casual ELF conversation: Cooperative or competitive contribution

摘要: Abstract This paper examines how international students from diverse lingua-cultural backgrounds utilize overlapping questions to actively contribute the development of ongoing interactions on social occasions in British university settings, where English is widely used as a lingua franca (ELF). The data consist five recordings elicited casual conversations among friends, and they were analyzed by using conversation analytic approach. Overlapping talk frequently reported demonstration active involvement ELF (e.g., Cogo Dewey, 2012 ). Yet little has been explored about overlaps that claim for turn space. investigates this type overlap, focusing questions. analysis shown an question results simultaneous application rules 1b (a next speaker self-selects) 1c (the current continues) turn-taking two speakers, although actual production sometimes delayed ( Murata, 1994 With interactants neither treat overlap interruptive nor competitive Bilmes, 1997 , Schegloff, 2000 2002 Rather, cooperatively move forward without clinging overlap. Their use, resolution, response are appropriate interactions, consequently, successful achieving mutual understanding developing interpersonal relationships.
