Healthcare Web Accessibility: Litigation Avoidance or Strategic Opportunity?

摘要: In 2006, the National Federation of Blind (NFB) sued Target Corporation alleging that retailer’s website was inaccessible to blind, in violation Americans with Disability Act (ADA) and various California statutes. eventually settled case for US$9.7 million. The presents an interesting dilemma private sector healthcare providers. What corporate strategy is appropriate web accessibility? US Federal state laws do not specifically require a company make its accessible customers disabilities. However, adverse media exposure from class action suit by disability group can significantly damage company’s reputation social responsibility (CSR). We develop model accessibility behavior based on literature linking CSR activities financial performance. test use within industry focusing private-sector companies deliver online information. compare our sample non-healthcare years before after onset litigation. Results reveal significant differences way corporations choose address accessibility.
