NEW RECORD OF BALANUS ZHUJIANGENSIS (CIRRIPEDIA, BALANIDAE) FROM OKINAWA, JAPAN

摘要: Abstract The intertidal barnacle Balanus zhujiangensis Ren, 1989, is reported from Okinawa, Japan, for the first time. A supplementary description of this species provided, and specimens are compared to those Zhujiang River estuary which empties into South China Sea. Several morphological characteristics shell, mouthparts, armature cirrus III suggest that B. related amphitrite complex rather than trigonus by consistently having but a single row pits on external surface scutum lacking an adductor ridge. presence scutal interpreted as means facilitating transmission light through valve thereby allowing photoreceptors detect changes in intensity while operculum closed.
