摘要: Background Little is known about the association between dietary carbohydrates and cataract in nondiabetic persons. Objective The aim was to test whether recent carbohydrate intakes or glycemic index (GI; a measure of intake quality) associated with presence cortical nuclear opacities. Design A modified Block food-frequency questionnaire used obtain information from 3377 participants (aged 60-80 y; 56% were women) Age-Related Eye Disease Study (AREDS). Lens status evaluated by using AREDS System for Classifying Cataracts. Associations examined eyes only single, pure, type lens opacity generalized estimating approach logistic regression account lack independence person. Results For highest quartile, GI higher prevalence all pure opacities [grade >2; odds ratio (OR): 1.29; 95% CI: 1.04, 1.59; P trend = 0.02] moderate (grade > =4; OR: 1.43; 0.96, 2.14; 0.052). OR comparison lowest quartile 1.27 (95% 0.99, 1.63; 0.09) any severity (>0% area opaque), increased somewhat (>5% opaque; 1.71; 1.00, 2.95; 0.056). Conclusions cross-sectional analysis baseline data suggest that quality quantity may be prevalent opacities, respectively.
