A prototype infrared (IR) acousto-optic tunable filter (AOTF)-basedpoint spectrometer hasbeen designed forexamining andanalyzingpotentialbiologicalsamplescollectedinsitufromtheplanetsorothersolarsystem objects. The reflectance operates at a wavelengthrange 1.6 to 3.6 μm, which is diagnostic minerals and organics, and inspects 1-mm sized spot on the sample. tuning componentis AOTF that has been utilized in variety spectral detection appli-cations. instrument’s specification design approach including theselected components described. data acquisition system, elec-tronic components, their interconnections are presented. instru-ment’s radiometric performance examined described by noiseequivalent value 0.13% obtained from laboratorymeasurements. device demonstrated measuring thereflectance spectra for geological samples comparingthe results with United States Geological Survey data.
