摘要: Background The National Dementia Strategy in England stressed the importance of earlier diagnosis dementia. In-depth knowledge experiences patients using such services remains an evidence gap. Aim To increase understanding people developing dementia and their carers, to inform practice decision making. Design setting A retrospective prospective qualitative interview study participants recruited from four memory clinics London, north-west north-east England. Method Purposive sampling was used recruit 27 individuals with problems 26 supporters carers. Interviews explored referral pathways, assessment processes, disclosure diagnosis, being prescribed medication help symptoms, issues risk Results Few experienced process as patient centred. Where processes were lengthy drawn out, considerable uncertainty. Many tests assessments distressing, sometimes settings that perceived alarming or potentially stigmatising by association. Information provision communication variable practitioners not always thought make sense experiences. Conclusion transition early stages cognitive impairment is straightforward. There much uncertainty waiting. Primary care may be better able provide tailored support carers during this time if they are aware what anticipating informed about diagnostic ‘journey’ insights those who have it.
