摘要: This chapter attempts to elucidate conservation ecology of Smooth-coated Otter Lutrogale perspicillata through a review based on past studies in Rajasthan. Otters are semiaquatic members the Mustelidae family, and their presence serves as an important biological indicator wetland quality. Of five species otters reported from Asia, three species, namely, Eurasian Lutra lutra, Small-clawed Aonyx cinereus, found India. The is largest most common Asian otters; being distributed throughout India, L. prefers habitats such large rivers, lakes swamps tends compete for resources with A. cinereus lutra when all occur sympatrically. listed Vulnerable (VU) by IUCN Appendix II CITES Schedule (Part II) Wildlife (Protection) Amendment Act, 2006. Studies scanty, only known distribution Rajasthan has been recorded “World Heritage site”, Keoladeo National Park [Bharatpur] Chambal Sanctuary [Kota]. While some measure research established, distributional records largely subjective or chance observations, result, there exists no concrete database monitoring population trends this species.
