A review of otters (Carnivora: Mustelidae: Lutrinae) in Malaysia and Singapore

摘要: Four species of otters have been recorded from Malaysia and Singapore in the past: Lutra lutra (Common or Eurasian Otter), sumatrana (Hairy-nosed Lutrogale perspicillata (Smooth Otter) Amblonyx cinereus (Oriental Small-clawed Otter). All four are listed Threatened Species Categories IUCN Red List Animals: L. is designated ‘Vulnerable’ status other three Asian ‘Insufficiently Known’ due to lack information. From a review available literature collation museum records Singapore, past examined. Presently, only A. common Peninsular where they widely distributed, but both rare Singapore. apparently still found East Malaysia. It possible that did not range this century. Information about habitat types, group size, range, diet behaviour for all poorly known. The information allows discussion Smooth Otters only. This dearth knowledge has hampered maintenance breeding efforts zoos conservation activity.
