摘要: Despite its reactivity and hence toxicity to living cells, sulfite is readily converted by various microorganisms using distinct assimilatory dissimilatory metabolic routes. In respiratory pathways, either serves as a primary electron donor or terminal acceptor (yielding sulfate sulfide, respectively), conversion drives transport chains that are coupled chemiosmotic ATP synthesis. Notably, such processes also seen play general role in detoxification, which assumed have an evolutionary ancient origin. The diversity of reflected the fact range microbial sulfite-converting enzymes displays different cofactors siroheme, heme c, molybdopterin. This chapter aims summarize current knowledge metabolism focuses on catabolism. structure function emerging picture modular architecture corresponding respiratory/detoxifying emphasized.
