Diurnal changes in photochemical efficiency and xanthophyll concentrations in shallow water reef corals : evidence for photoinhibition and photoprotection

摘要: Diurnal patterns of photoinhibition have been identified in seven species shallow water reef corals from the Andaman Sea, off west coast Thailand, using pulse amplitude fluorometry. Photochemical efficiency (Fv/Fm) and quantum yield (ΔF/Fm∑) symbiotic dinoflagellates within declined after dawn to reach a minimum between midday early afternoon, recovering former levels by evening. Parallel studies on xanthophylls diadinoxanthin (Dn) diatoxanthin (Dt), their inter-conversion, also revealed strong diurnal pattern as well inverse correlations xanthophyll ratio Dt/(Dn+Dt) Fv/Fm ΔF/Fm′. These findings suggest photoprotective function for these pigments.
