摘要: Superlattice structures and rippling fringes were imaged on two separate pieces of graphite (HOPG) by scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM). We observed the corrugation conservation phenomenon one superlattice where an overlayer does not attenuate amplitude superlattice. Such a may illustrate implication that nanoscale defects few layers underneath surface propagate through many without decay form structure topmost surface. Some with periodicities 20 nm 30 corrugations 0.1 0.15 in area nearby regions. are believed to be due physical buckling The stress required generate such is estimated, possible cause discussed. An equation relating attenuation factor number overlayers proposed.
