摘要: Silver is a powerful antibacterial ion that may be useful for dealing with localized infections, such as periodontitis. However, the use of silver in this role could significantly improved by development an effective means delivery. Phosphate-based glasses provide delivering ions controlled manner. In our study, we have examined effect increasing content phosphate-based on biofilms Streptococcus sanguis. Glasses nominally same dissolution rate were doped at 1, 5,10, and 15 mol % number colony-forming units (CFUs) determined after 6 24 h constant depth film fermenter (CDFF). The 1 showed little change between h. only 0.5 log CFUs present glass containing 5 h, reduced to virtually zero Few viable bacteria found 10 both was investigated experiment, but no counts detected. second set experiments, tested CDFF up 192 For glass, there ∼0.8 which dropped almost 50 This approximately 1.5–2.0 reduction compared controls, difference maintained first After slow increase all samples. still suppressed controls. controls also exhibited decrease h; been due carryover into control sample holders. minimized specimen layout having gaps sets. decreased 48 numbers slowly increased 170 time point. seen clearly ions; however, accounted forming thick layers top discs inhibiting release from “sacrificial layer” through further diffuse. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
