摘要: Background Infantile beriberi (thiamine deficiency) occurs mainly in infants breastfed by mothers with inadequate intake of thiamine, typically among vulnerable populations. We describe possible and probable cases infantile thiamine deficiency northern Laos. Methodology/Principal Findings Three surveys were conducted Luang Namtha Province. First, we performed a retrospective survey all diagnosis admitted to the 5 hospitals province (2007–2009). Second, prospectively recorded cardiac failure at Hospital. Third, further investigated (1–6 months) living 22 villages patients’ origin. cross-sectional using pre-tested questionnaire, physical examination squat test. Infant mortality was estimated verbal autopsy. From March June 2010, four suspected Provincial hospital. All recovered after parenteral injection. Between 2007 2009, 54 possible/probable diagnosed acute severe failure, 49 (90.2%) cured thiamine; three died (5.6%). In villages, 468 live born infants, 50 (10.6%, 95% CI: 8.0–13.8) during first year. A peak (36 deaths) reported between 1 3 months. Verbal autopsy suggested that 17 deaths (3.6%) due deficiency. Of 127 mothers, 60 (47.2%) edema paresthesia as well positive test pregnancy; 125 (98.4%) respected post-partum food avoidance ate polished rice. 2 (1.6%) had deficiency, 8 (6.8%) Conclusion Thiamine may be major cause infant ethnic groups Mothers’ children’s symptoms are compatible The severity this nutritional situation requires urgent attention
