摘要: Kuru, the first human transmissible spongiform encephalopathy, was transmitted to chimpanzees by D. Carleton Gajdusek (1923-2008). In this review, I briefly summarize history of seminal discovery alongside its epidemiology, clinical picture, neuropathology and molecular genetics. The kuru opened new windows into realms medicine instrumental in later transmission Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease as well prediction that bovine encephalopathy would be humans. It one greatest discoveries biomedical sciences 20th century.
