摘要: Abstract Unconventional natural gas exploration using hydraulic fracturing has spread rapidly from its “birthplace” in the Barnett Shale to shale plays across globe, spurring polarized discussions about environmental and social risks. These debates have engaged many stakeholders, including some individuals with physical science backgrounds. This study presents results semi-structured, in-depth interviews I conducted these individuals, which demonstrate how they framed their engagement debates. argue that process of interacting politicized over impacted constructed what it means provide objective information public. In order objectivity, a number participants emphasized role as problem solvers for, rather than opponents of, oil industry. Also, balance against critical evaluation impacts fracturing, several (assumed) benefits energy exploration. Through exploring “problems method” faced by scientists research on controversial topics, for my own qualitative researcher, seek contribute our understanding challenges face engage research.
