N-acetyl cysteine therapy in acute viral hepatitis

摘要: AIM: To investigate the effect of N-acetyl cysteine (NAC) on acute viral hepatitis (AVH). METHODS: We administered 200 mg oral NAC three times daily (600 mg/day) to study group and placebo capsules control group. All patients were hospitalized diagnosed as AVH. Blood total direct bilirubin, ALT, AST, alkaline phosphatese, albumin globulin levels each patient measured twice weekly until bilirubin level dropped under 2 mg/dl, ALT 100 U/L, follow up was continued then discharged. RESULTS: A 41(13 female 28 male) AVH included in our study. The period for normalization 19.7 ± 6.9 days 13.7 8.5 respectively. In it 20.4 6.5 16.9 7.8 respectively (P > 0.05). CONCLUSION: administration effected neither time necessary values nor duration hospitalization, so we could not suggest treatment icteric cases. However, results have shown that this drug is harmful with
