摘要: ACUTE ILLNESS AND REHABILITATION In the first half of 20th century, polio was one most feared conditions in UK and USA. Few people were unaffected during epidemics 1940s 50s, which preceded introduction immunization with Salk inactivated vaccine 1956 Sabin live attenuated 1962. Patients remember anxiety mass hysteria surrounding each new outbreak poliomyelitis, fear often greatest amongst medical personnel, many whom affected (Gould 1995; Mulder 1991; Halstead 1995). This is graphically illustrated on cover Tony Gould’s classic description history poliomyelitis century (Fig. 1) There are striking accounts acute illness – patients recall bathing areas developing non-specific fl u-like symptoms, following periods prolonged exertion (Russell 1949).
