摘要: California ranchers in urban Alameda and Contra Costa Counties, rural Tehama County, were surveyed to examine effects of increasing development, land use change, attrition the ranching community on their commitment ranching, assess conservation program acceptability. Questions about practices, reasons for what influences ranching's future. Ranchers share much common. Most enjoy "feeling close earth," living a "good place family life," camaraderie community. They regularly carry out range improvements. believe that society is becoming "hostile ranching." A dislike outsider intervention control prevails. Urban cared significantly less fate ranch if sold, feared local planning more. Rural overwhelmingly wanted remain productive even sold. No new appeared sample last 10 years. As urbanization proceeds, we suggest point reached where recognize social, ecological, economic landscape as see it no longer suitable ranching. Expecting sell and/or expecting zoning change allow it, becomes rational view. Land efforts, including relatively acceptable though yet not widespread easement programs, should begin before happens.
