摘要: The formation mechanisms and properties of white layers produced in machining hardened steels are not clearly understood to date. In particular, detailed analysis their structure mechanical is lacking. This paper investigates the differences formed during AISI 52100 steel (62 HRC) at different cutting speeds. A combination experimental techniques including transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), nano-indentation used analyze formed. TEM results suggest that low-to-moderate speeds large part due grain refinement induced by severe plastic deformation, whereas layer high mainly thermally-driven phase transformation. all found be comprised very fine (nano-scale) grains compared bulk material. XRD-based residual stress retained austenite measurements, hardness data support these findings.
