Infection with HIV, syphilis and hepatitis B in Ethiopia: a survey in blood donors

摘要: The sera of all 2186 male blood donors presenting to the bank Gondar College Medical Sciences a regional hospital in Northwest Ethiopia during 1994-95 were screened for HIV-1 and treponemal antibodies; addition subset 549 from 1995 was tested hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg). In 1994 12% HIV-positive 13.1% had antibodies. Seroprevalence rates 16.7% HIV 12.8% syphilis 14.4% HBsAg. seroprevalence highest among soldiers (30.6% 20.9% respectively) daily workers (18.8% 13.5% lowest farmers (8.0% 6.7% respectively). contrast rate HBsAg found (18.8%). HIV-infected significantly more likely than HIV-negative be positive as well (odds ratio 3.69; 95% confidence interval 2.69-4.96) but there no such pattern 0.79; 0.36-1.67). increasing infection observed different occupational groups indicates that epidemic has not yet reached plateau Ethiopia. Moreover finding is associated with suggests set risk factors have sexually transmitted diseases.
