摘要: Background: Heatstroke is the third leading cause of death in athletics, and an important morbidity mortality exercising athletes. There no current method, however, for identifying milder forms heat illness. In this pilot study, we sought to develop provide initial validation a Heat Illness Symptom Index scale (HISI) that would facilitate research assessment illness Methods: The study was designed as multimodal prospective observational Division I football players during twice daily practices southern Florida. We developed 13-item assessed symptoms are suspected occur resultant reliability using Cronbach's alpha, construct validity by correlating scores with factors known be related HISI scores, well data on perceived exertion, player position, pre post practice weights were collected from 95 athletes participating late summer practices. A total 557 athlete sessions analyzed. Results: mean score symptom 12.1 (SD 13.8) median value 8.0. alpha confirmed suitable internal consistency when separately each five morning (alpha = 0.91, 0.88, 0.82, 0.92, 0.85). statistically significant correlations weight loss (P 0.006), rating exertion 0.005), position < 0.0001), ambient index 0.02) hypothesized. Conclusions: This provides novel symptom-based tool use assessing mild athletic population. Further studies instrument, measures core temperature, needed planned.
