Piriform sinus fistula. A route of infection in acute suppurative thyroiditis.

摘要: • Fifteen patients had acute suppurative thyroiditis resulting from infection through the left piriform sinus fistula. Characteristic clinical features included (1) onset in infancy or childhood, (2) lobe involvement, and (3) frequent recurrence unless fistula was extirpated completely. Fistulectomy eight demonstrated three distinct courses of fistula: lateral to, medial penetrating thyroid lobe. Anatomical histological findings suggest that is a remnant third pharyngeal pouch. We believe common route thyroiditis, allowing bacterial to begin either perithyroidal space, spreading into gland secondarily, gland, primarily cases where it penetrates gland.
