A Tetracycline‐Based Histomorphometric Evaluation of Bone Resorption and Bone Turnover in Hyperthyroidism and Hyperparathyroidism

Increased bone resorption previously found in hyperthyroidism might be caused by a direct stimulating effect of thyroid hormone(s) on cells or an increased sensitivity to circulating parathyroid hormone. In order disclose qualitative differences the response resorbing excess hormone and hormone(s), histomorphometric analysis iliac crest biopsies was performed 25 hyperparathyroid 40 hyperthyroid patients after tetracycline double-labelling. The main target for hormones were different. Parathyroid stimulated osteocytic osteolysis osteoclastic surfaces equally trabecular cortical bone. inactive. Thyroid had no osteocytes but bone, with pronounced preponderance active followed significant loss both findings support assumption that is hormone(s).
