摘要: Aim The purpose of the study was to determine risk postoperative complications and functional outcome after a hand-sewn ileal pouch–anal anastomosis (IPAA) for ulcerative colitis using single J-shaped pouch design. Methods Preoperative function, operative morbidity long-term were assessed prospectively in 1310 patients who underwent IPAA between 1981 1994 colitis. Results Three died operation. Postoperative pelvic sepsis rates decreased from 7 per cent 1981–1985 3 1991–1994 (P=0·02). After mean follow-up 6·5 (range 2–15) years, number stools 5 day 1 night. Frequent daytime night-time incontinence occurred 12 respectively, did not change over 10-year period. The cumulative probability suffering at least one episode ‘clinical’ pouchitis 18 48 10 years failure 2 9 respectively. Conclusion These results indicate that increased experience decreases pouch-related with time remain stable, but rate increases. © 1998 British Journal Surgery Society Ltd
