摘要: We applied an integrative framework to illuminate and discuss the complexities of exurbanization in Macon County, North Carolina. The case Carolina, highlights complexity involved addressing issues Southern Appalachian region. Exurbanization, process by which urban residents move into rural areas search unique natural amenities idealized lifestyles, can often have a dramatic impact on local economy, culture, environment. Within complex debates tensions among multiple stakeholders struggle address residential development. How better problem definition benefit communities pressures effects? asserted that key factor shortcomings previous solutions was shortsightedness inherent policy attempts treat individual symptoms without being able adequately characterize underlying problem. goal is initiate iterative transparent negotiation, recognizes range potential choices be considered embrace social at times overwhelm scholars practitioners, inviting simplification polarization issues. This new emerging offers novel way approaching conservation development where other frameworks failed. It helps acknowledge difficult choices, i.e., trade-offs, made material like exurbanization. Trade-offs will necessary any negotiation related conservation. Therefore, conflict surrounding specific values, e.g., cultural, financial, or ecological, must acknowledged upfront deeper plurality. Given complexity, understanding how played out within County provided not only opportunity demonstrate functionality approach, but also call for further study dynamics.
