摘要: Objectives To conduct a systematic review of how short-stay observation units (SOUs) affect the efficiency healthcare delivery and quality services provided. Data sources MEDLINE, CINAHL, Best Evidence The Cochrane Library were searched for period 1 January 1960 to 31 July 2000. Study selection Studies eligible if published in English rated at National Health Medical Research Council evidence levels I, II-1, II-2, or II-3; 12 comparative studies between 1985 1998 met these criteria. extraction pertaining clinical outcomes, length stay, re-presentation rates, emergency department costs care extracted evaluated independently. synthesis As there was considerable heterogeneity patient populations results summarised rather than subjected meta-analysis. Conclusion SOUs have potential increase satisfaction, reduce improve departments cost effectiveness. However, commonly been implemented alongside new protocols, it is not possible distinguish relative benefits each. demand increases, providing effective cost-efficient will become increasingly important. may help organisations that are attempting streamline while maintaining their service delivery.
