摘要: Abstract Background In a culture transitioning between the traditions of old and modernity, experience pregnancy brings added challenges. Pregnant Taiwanese women in large cities are expected to modify their behavior keeping with long-standing that remain important families even if they themselves do not endorse beliefs. To date, researchers have examined processes components transformation self-identity during under these cultural conditions. Objectives examine self by living urban Taiwan at time when modern ideas women's roles health care practices co-exist traditional beliefs on issues. Methods This was qualitative study using in-depth, open-ended interviews. Eighteen pregnant receiving prenatal examinations clinics located medical center Taipei, Taiwan, participated this study. Interview responses were analyzed phenomenological approach. Results Cultural family expectations clearly influenced activities sense pregnancy. Two themes central experiences. The first, "constructing new context values," reflected need for develop response beliefs, taboos, public advice made very explicit lives second theme, "building body image from past self," addresses how reactions ways which viewed as individuals. Conclusions factors issues shape modernizing, yet culturally traditional, environment Taiwan.
