Transforming Urban Dichotomies and Challenges of South Asian Megacities: Rethinking Sustainable Growth of Dhaka, Bangladesh

摘要: Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh, is eleventh largest megacity city in world, with a population 18.2 million people living an area 1528 km2. This profile traces trajectories its urban development to becoming and characterizes emerging challenges due informal urbanization climate change impacts. Due rapid growth uncontrolled urbanization, Dhaka currently faces various socio-economic environmental aspects such as providing basic services; reliable transportation framework; constant water energy supply; effective sanitation; sustainable waste management affordable housing. Moreover, setting has further deteriorated already facing adverse impacts change. Studies predict that most sectors, public health surrounding agriculture fisheries will be severely impacted by trying transform existing “incremental development” model “integrated framework order effectively mitigate extreme challenges. The future significantly relies on successful execution integrated infrastructure service planning, development, practices, operating under accountable good governance system.
