This was beginning acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) pandemic. Initially, infection with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) appeared to be associated activities, which led initial naming gay-related syndrome. However, it soon became clear that heterosexual direct blood contact could also transmit newly recognized pathogen.
