摘要: Background Global brain abnormalities such as volume loss and grey- white-matter deficits are consistently reported in first-episode schizophrenia patients may already be detectable the very early stages of illness. Whether these changes dependent on medication use or related to intelligence quotient (IQ) is still debated. Method Magnetic resonance imaging scans were obtained for 20 medication-naive with 26 matched healthy subjects. Volume measures total grey white matter, third lateral ventricles cortical thickness/surface obtained. Differences between groups investigated, taking into account effect intelligence. Results Medication-naive showed statistically significant reductions whole-brain cerebral together ventricle enlargement compared IQ was significantly lower controls positively associated whole group. No differences thickness found but had a smaller surface left superior temporal pole, Heschl's gyrus insula controls. Conclusions Our findings suggest that present at illness onset, can explained by reduced insular cortex. These not medication, IQ.
