Fertile Ground for Community: Inner-City Neighborhood Common Spaces

摘要: Research suggests that the formation of neighborhood social ties (NSTs) may substantially depend on informal contact which occurs in common spaces, and inner-city neighborhoods where spaces are often barren no-man's lands, presence trees grass supports space use among neighbors. We found for 145 urban public housing residents randomly assigned to 18 architecturally identical buildings, levels vegetation predict both NSTs; further, mediated relationship between NSTS. In addition, NSTs were significantly related residents' senses safety adjustment. These findings suggest characteristics play a vital role natural growth community, improving be an especially productive focus community organizing efforts neighborhoods.
