摘要: Bacterial strains belonging to the same species vary considerably in gene content. Thus, genetic repertoire of a given (its “pan-genome”) is much larger than content individual strains. These variations DNA material, together with differences genomic structure and nucleotide polymorphisms among strains, confer upon prokaryotic phenomenal adaptability. Although approach sequencing multiple from single remains main often easiest way study pan-genome, feasible alternatives include those related hybridization. In other cases, use metagenomic sequences already applicable by data mining growing databases. Eventually, single-cell genome might be ideal solution. The pan-genome concept has important consequences for we understand bacterial evolution, adaptation, population structure, as well more applied issues such vaccine design or identification virulence genes.
