摘要: Context Allergic mucin, a lamellated collection of inspissated inflammatory debris, has been hallmark allergic fungal sinusitis. While its identification is clue for pathologists to search fungi, and directs clinicians toward specific therapy follow-up, recent reports describe cases with mucin but without concomitant fungus. The absence such organisms in otherwise typical brings into question the role fungi Objectives To study clinical pathologic differences between patients surgical nasal resection specimens elucidate fungus Design Patients histologic evidence fungus, were identified retrieved from pathology files tertiary-care institution. separated 2 groups analysis, their findings reviewed compared. Setting Tertiary-care All who underwent sinus mucosal 1992 1998. Results Clinical presentation radiographic similar both groups. Incidence, age, gender distribution data reported previously. However, amount was much greater group than which our knowledge an unreported observation date. Conclusion presence not unique sinusitis, rather result process that could have other etiologies. perhaps always causative disease, continues fuel likely entrapped bystander. sinusitis more appropriately termed mucinous or eosinophilic rhinosinusitis.
