摘要: Some polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) congeners are CYP1A1 inducers, and induction of this enzyme in the placenta has been linked to adverse effects on fetal development. The objective study was determine if body burden PCBs is related placental activity Inuit women from Nunavik (northern Quebec), a population highly exposed organochlorines. Placenta cord blood samples were obtained 35 30 southern Quebec community background levels We measured PCB concentrations all plasma subset group assessed (ethoxyresorufin-O-deethylase; EROD) microsomes participants. Concentrations strongly correlated those (Pearson's r) = 0.77-0.97, p < 0.001) average 4-fold higher than [for 153, geometric means (geometric SDs) 83.3 (1.9) ng/g lipid vs. 16.9 (1.6) lipid, respectively]. Despite difference burden, both groups had similar EROD activities when data stratified according tobacco smoking. Although simple correlation analysis first showed that with 153 concentration group, multivariate failed demonstrate significant contribution smoking included analysis. conclude dietary exposure does not significantly influence placenta, implicating as major modulating factor.
