Indigenous Engagement in Tropical River Research in Australia: The TRaCK Program

摘要: The literature on scientific-Indigenous ecological knowledge collaborations rarely analyses programmatic efforts undertaken by multi-disciplinary research groups over very large geographic scales. TRaCK (Tropical Rivers and Coastal Knowledge) program was established to provide the science needed governments, industries, communities sustainably manage northern Australia's rivers estuaries. A number of policies procedures were developed ensure that needs Indigenous people multi-jurisdictional region addressed enhance benefits they might derive from participating in research. An overarching Engagement Strategy undergirded program's engagement activities, providing guidance matters relating protection intellectual property, negotiation agreements, remuneration for expertise, communications standards. This article reviews achievements shortcomings experience highlights lessons researchers organisations contemplating applied environmental initiatives this scale scope.
