摘要: Galicia (NW Spain) is an important fishing region with a high potential for cetacean–fishery interactions. Cetacean depredation on catch and damage to gear can potentially lead substantial economic loss fishers, while cetacean bycatch raises conservation concerns. With the aim of gathering information types scale interactions suggesting possible management strategies, we conducted face-to-face interviews fishers in local harbours, particular identify specific problematic quantify level rates associated these We found that are frequent, although by cetaceans was mostly reported as small. Nevertheless, result fromcommon bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) damaging coastal gillnets from short-beaked common (Delphinus delphis) scattering fish purse-seine fisheries. mortality be highest trawls set gillnets, probably exceeds sustainable levels dolphin populations. Although interviewdata may biased due perceptions interviewees, therefore should interpreted care, methodology allowed us covermultiple sites fisheries within reasonable time frame. Minimizing requires implementation case-specific strategies active participation fishers. For gillnet fisheries, use acoustic deterrent devices (pingers) prevent approaching getting trapped nets. trawl where appears particularly at night water depths 100–300 m, solutions include time/area closures relocation some effort deeper waters.
