摘要: Conflict between 'indigenes' of particular localities, and 'settlers' there, is widespread in Nigeria. Sometimes religious difference compounds the problem. This essay studies indigene-settler tensions Jos, capital Plateau State, which twice now, most recently November 2008, have erupted into violent clashes claiming many hundreds lives. The story 2008 outbreak told against its background ethnicity, religion, local history, politics, ambivalent state Nigerian law on subject indigene rights, and, perhaps harmfully intractably, corrupt incompetent government. conclusion suggests little hope for quick improvement.
